So men, we're no longer needed, scientists in the UK have created sperm from stem cells. The lesbians can now completely take over the world and do away with us.

11:41 pm - Bad News, Good News
My printer finally died after nearly eight years of loyal service. However the reward points that I have on my credit card for using it for work-related travel were enough to redeem for a new HP PhotoSmart C4480 Printer/Scanner/Fax at no cost.

11:06 pm - Well, It's A Start
So this afternoon after food shopping, I got out the sewing machine and finally made the covers for the throw pillows I bought for the couch when I moved here. It's not garb, but it was something that I've been putting off. Perhaps tomorrow I will work on some garb.

1:41 am - Rekindling a passion
So with Pennsic approaching, and the pile of fabric in the corner gathering dust, I am trying to find a way to rekindle my passion for tailoring and sewing. I haven't really done anything in over a year. I think it is part due to having injured my wrist/arm and part because the last few times I took up sewing projects, which were for other people, they never came to fruition, and were more frustrating then productive. I also think part of it is the lack of people to do it with. Back on LI, when I would work on stuff with [info]sterlingspider, [info]volatilefiona, [info]lease, [info]alphawench, [info]mobiboros, ect.. , my enthusiam and creativity got bolstered by theirs.

I have ideas, and materials, just trying to find the enthusiasm to get motivated and to make it fun again.

18 Species Named After Famous People
One of my life dreams is to get a species named after me, and hopefully it won't be a species that causes a contagious disease.

1:11 pm - Anniversary
As of today it has been one year since I moved to Boston. While not everything has gone smoothly, I have no regrets about having moved here, especially considering how much I like the lab that I am working in now. At some point I'll have more time to reflect on this, but for now I need to get back to work.

3:37 pm - Only Part of What Was Coming to Him
Bernie Madoff has been sentenced to 150 years in prison. It's a good start, but it's not going to get back what he took from people, which included a new neuroscience center for our hospital.

12:04 pm - Happy Dance
For the past year, I've been using my personal laptop, a first generation Intel-based MacBook, at the lab to work on manuscripts and such, which our Linux workstations don't do well (EndNote and other programs don't run on them). Lately I've been doing more statistical analyses, and my laptop is straining with the statical software package, SPSS, that we use. Additionally, the laptop doesn't have a good enough graphics card to run Slicer, our imaging software. Today I approached the subject with my boss, and she gave me permission to order a new MacBook Pro.

2:03 pm - IRB Hell
I am currently trying to get proper IRB approval to finish analyzing my dissertation data so that I can get it published. After the fiasco with my old boss leaving Mt Sinai, there is no current approved IRB protocol at Mt Sinai to allow for the use of the data. The former assistant director of the lab is trying to get a new IRB approval to allow for analysis of the data. Mt Sinai's IRB will not approve the protocol to allow for external collaborators, such as myself, to work on the data without letters of approval from the IRB at the collaborators' institutions, in my case Brigham and Women's Hospital. However the Brigham IRB will not approve a use of external data without first getting a copy of the approved protocol from the primary institution's IRB. So Mt Sinai won't approve it without the Brigham's approval first, and the Brigham won't approve of it without Mt Sinai's approval first. Talk about a Catch 22.
